This guidance programme is based on the duties identified in the IMDG Code Amendment 38-16. If there is any conflict between explanations in this programme and the text of the IMDG Code you must follow the duty identified in the legal text.

The Marine Pollutant mark. Class 7 radioactive material is exempted from this requirement. It may apply to Class 6.1 UN3507 packages. It must be applied to all classes 1-6, 8, 9 packages containing material deemed to be an Environmentally Hazardous Substance/Marine Pollutant if there is more than 5L/5kg of material per inner packaging or per single packaging. WHAT For UN3507 only, if any package inner or the single packaging holds more than 5L/5kg of material the consignor must determine whether the material is an Environmentally Hazardous Substance/Marine Pollutant. If the material is an Environmentally Hazardous Substance/Marine Pollutant this mark must be applied adjacent to the UN number/Proper Shipping Name mark. WHERE IMDG 2.10.2.7 indicates the concession for 5L/5kg inners or single packagings. IMDG 2.10.3.2 excludes class 7 material from Environmentally Hazardous Substance/Marine Pollutant classification. IMDG 5.2.1.6 identifies the need for the marine pollutant mark to be applied to packagings containing dangerous goods which meet the Environmentally Hazardous Substance/Marine Pollutant criteria.

Generally known as the CSI or Fissile label. It is shown on all packages where the contents are radioactive material with a criticality risk. WHAT The Criticality Safety Index, CSI, is a number calculated by the Competent Authority when they certify a package to carry fissile material. It is shown on the Competent Authority package approval certificate and the consignor must record it on the CSI label and the transport document. Ships normally must limit the CSI in any cargo space or container to 50. 200 is the maximum total CSI routinely allowed in a vessel but if the cargo is in closed containers there is no limit to the total CSI permitted. WHERE IMDG 5.2.2.1.12.3 explains how this part of the label should be completed by the consignor. IMDG 7.1.4.5.3.4 explains CSI limits aboard ship.

Generally known as a Yellow-III label because of the upper area colour and the three red bars. WHAT In addition to “Contents” and “Activity” details (see White-I information), this label shows the package “Transport Index”, TI. The TI indicates how much radiation is being emitted from the package. The higher the number, the greater the emissions. This label is normally used for TIs above 1.0. Ships normally must limit the TI in any cargo space or container to 50. 200 is the maximum total TI routinely allowed in a vessel but if the cargo is in closed containers there is no limit to the total TI permitted.
